Jesus respond s with the parable of the Good Samaritan, where a man, presumably Jewish, is attacked, robbed and left for dead on the side of the road. A priest and a Levite, both considered honorable to the Jewish audience, pass the man by. Clearly, that means they are the most important commandments. The Apostle John wrote more about love than all of the other apostles combined. Not taking revenge is part of loving God and loving neighbor.
Again, we go back to obedience; to be loving God naturally includes loving our neighbor. Jesus often refers back to the Law and the Prophets when teaching that we must love our neighbor as we do ourselves. God did not give us what we deserved…He gave us what we needed. What does loving our neighbor look like in real life? Who is our neighbor? Who do you see?
Our neighbor is anyone that we can help. Perhaps a neighbor, whoever that might be, would reach out for help today. What would be your and my response? The best thing we can do for our neighbor is to love them, and the love of God should compel us to share Christ with them. We need to let them know that God demands perfect righteousness to enter the kingdom, but God provides what He demands through Jesus Christ.
Luke And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.
Luke And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: …. Leviticus But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. Luke Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves.
For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others?
Do not even the Gentiles do the same? And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God. Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field.
Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock.
Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?
Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked. If a thief is found breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no bloodguilt for him, but if the sun has risen on him, there shall be bloodguilt for him. He shall surely pay.
If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, Masters, treat your slaves justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven. Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.
At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.
Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place.
He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John,.
