Jodie Foster plays the role of Clarice Starling who is sent to interview Hannibal Lecter, a cannibalistic serial killer, who is also a brilliant forensic psychiatrist. She visits him in the prison where he gives her insights about Buffalo Bill, the serial killer who skins his victims. The film is one of the best psychological thrillers of all time. It received critical acclaim on its release and also won Academy Awards in all the major categories, becoming the only film in the horror genre to do so.
While the movie delivers some brilliant performances from the cast, its surroundings also help in inducing the fear in the story. From Quantico to Baltimore, to Tennessee to Ohio, Clarice Starling has to run here and there to piece together the crimes of Buffalo Bill and catch him.

While she is still a trainee, Crawford asks her to question Dr. Hannibal Lecter Sir Anthony Hopkins , a psychiatrist imprisoned, thus far, for eight years in maximum security isolation for being a serial killer who cannibalized his victims.
Clarice is able to figure out the assignment is to pick Lecter's brains to help them solve another serial murder case, that of someone coined by the media as "Buffalo Bill" Ted Levine , who has so far killed five victims, all located in the eastern U. She also figures that Crawford chose her, as a woman, to be able to trigger some emotional response from Lecter. After speaking to Lecter for the first time, she realizes that everything with him will be a psychological game, with her often having to read between the very cryptic lines he provides.
She has to decide how much she will play along, as his request in return for talking to him is to expose herself emotionally to him. The case takes a more dire turn when a sixth victim is discovered, this one from who they are able to retrieve a key piece of evidence, if Lecter is being forthright as to its meaning. A potential seventh victim is high profile Catherine Martin Brooke Smith , the daughter of Senator Ruth Martin Diane Baker , which places greater scrutiny on the case as they search for a hopefully still alive Catherine.
Who may factor into what happens is Dr. Frederick Chilton Anthony Heald , the warden at the prison, an opportunist who sees the higher profile with Catherine, meaning a higher profile for himself if he can insert himself successfully into the proceedings. In his mind lies the clue to a ruthless killer. The movie was scheduled for release in the middle of February because Orion Pictures, its distributor, already had a can't-miss hit with Dances With Wolves , and they wanted to give Kevin Costner as little competition as possible for the awards season.
The strategy paid off, as Dances With Wolves won seven Oscars. On the occasion of the film's 30th anniversary, here are some things you might not have known about Jonathan Demme's The Silence of the Lambs. Manhunter barely made half of its budget back at the box office, so producer Dino De Laurentiis gave away the rights he had for Lecter to The Silence of the Lambs producers gratis. But Hackman dropped out days after he watched clips of himself at the Oscars as FBI Agent Rupert Anderson in Alan Parker's Mississippi Burning; he decided he didn't want to follow up a dark role with an even more unlikable character.
But after meeting the determined actress twice, he changed his mind. His theory was that people already have a fear of doctors and dentists who wear white on the job.
