It seems a lot of contemporary comedies forget the very concept behind their existence. As much as I enjoy 30 Rock , or even Big Bang Theory , a substantial portion of the jokes and humor is very derivative. Situation Comedy. Another upside to limiting references is, simply put, increased playback value. The content ends up being very accessible to a wide audience. In other words, life.
As the title of the episode indicates spoiler alert , everyone ends up finding out about the couple. The real power of the show is to turn what amounts to a TV trope friends trying to hide their secret romantic relationship into a legitimately funny and fresh concept.
The idea is not new, but the execution is ridiculously fun. In that moment, the laughs come from the imbroglio within the situation. We know, they know, but no one wants to admit it. Comedy in the situation. Which brings us to my next point…. An often overlooked facet of comedies is the emotional component. The climax of the Friends scene I just mentioned is not the jokes milked from the concept Phoebe v.
As Phoebe is about to kiss Chandler, he finally admits that he is actually in love with Monica. All of this comedic build-up is meaningless if it is not attached to something real. Chandler's sarcasm is still as funny as ever. Monica's quirkiness still works. Phoebe's goofiness still brings about a smile. And Joey,Rachel and Ross are still as funny as they always were. So stop being a bunch of cynics and enjoy the show while it's still on.

Despite living upstairs, the friends all like to get together in this comfy, well-lit place, drinking big cups of coffee and laughing together. Sometimes they have jobs, sometimes they don't but if money troubles are experienced then they are temporary and comical.
The problems they experience in life are less about loss and pain brought about by their own character failings, and more about leaving their laundry somewhere amusing etc.
Of course it is a sitcom and you want all this stuff so, like I said, it is very clean, very safe and so on. Personally I tend to prefer dramas when it comes to television, just because I enjoy depth, I enjoy complexity and I do not think for one minute that life is like "Friends" for anybody, although I can see why viewers clung to its ideal.
The cast are pretty and perform their undemanding stuff well enough to produce bland characters that hopefully all the viewers will like. None of them are actually that good but they are good enough for the genre and the product. I always found Cox prettier and more able to get a bit of personality into her role and she was better for it. Perry I liked but only because his humour is closer to mine than the others; of course his stuff does get annoying quickly and the fact that he seems unable to do anything else just adds to it.
LeBlanc suits sitcom world and at least has had the sense to just stay there although the idea that his dumb spin-off was ever going to be Frasier is a bit rich. Don't get me wrong though; overall this is a fine bit of American sitcom. Why it has done so well I don't really know but if I did I'd be copying it and chasing every dollar I could get. Personally the bland mix of inoffensive humour and unconvincing relationship "drama" just didn't appeal to me but it goes without saying that fans of the genre will love this and, hey, should probably buy yet another box set just to shut people like me up!
Although it all began very badly My cousins in Greece asked a few years ago if I watch this show called "Friends". I didn't know it then, so they told me to look out for it. And although they do a pretty good job mostly, they totally screwed up Friends. I watched it with the German voices and was appalled. I might have chuckled a few times, but I was mostly irritated.
Especially Phoebe one of the characters in Friends I hated her! Her voice was annoying as hell. I later watched the show in English and was amazed by it's charm, wit and humor.
All the characters are well written and they have their flaws and weaknesses. Some people might argue that you can't have this idealistic friendship in New York, some others have said, that there aren't enough black people for New York.
But those are minor details that don't detract from the overall good impression the show leaves. The last season isn't as good as the other ones, but then again, ten years is a long running time.
If you're interested in a good comedy show, about friendship, respect, loyalty and love, then this is the one to watch! This is probably one of, if the not the best sitcom about friendship ever made. With the lovable characters living their New York lives and having wonderfully crafted scripts and story lines, this is simply the best.
The six friends are all recognisable now for doing ten years of Friends. Throughout the ten years that they did they had love stories, children stories, specials and the relationships between the friends.
After ten years they finally did a brilliantly funny and an emotional final hour-long episode. The spin-off for Joey is nowhere as good as his original show. ComedyFan 17 September I really do like this sitcom. I never understood the need of people to compare it to Seinfeld and make a battle of which show is better.
I like them both, but those are two different types of sitcoms to me. Just because they are both about Friends living in New York it doesn't mean that they have that much in common Friends has created some pretty good characters.
Chandler is one of the favorites because of his sarcasm. Phoebe is a very unique character. Ross is incredibly funny. They all have something special about them The acting also was good. David Schwimmer is my absolute favorite in it. His performance as Ross often made even episodes with story lines I didn't care much about rise to a higher level. They all had their moment where they did a great job, some more often than others And there were quiet a few great story lines.
Some of them that went on for several episodes and some small ones that we only saw for one episode. There was a lot of diversity in those themes and some original ideas The show did go down a bit after a few seasons. Mainly after Monica and Chandler got together. What happened after was that Monica's character was completely ruined. She used to be likable in the first 4 seasons but after this there was nothing positive left about her.
Chandler went down a bit as well because of their relationship. And Phoebe had her bad moments towards the end even though for the most part she remained a great character There were a few story lines that I could live without, like for example the whole Joey and Rachel story. And yet, I can probably find 10 or maybe even less episodes that I completely disliked in the whole ten seasons.
The show continued to make me laugh until the very end And I don't care if the show isn't all that realistic. If I want reality, I watch news. This show is sitcom that I watch to laugh, not to figure out how Joey makes Chandler pay for his stuff or how Phoebe can afford to live in Manhattan.
I also don't mind that it is lighter humor, not something incredibly intellectual. I like this as well And besides comedy, we also get some great relationships on this show. My favorite one would be Joey and Chandler. Their friendship is my favorite. They have so many great moments! The time when Joey moved out, or Chandler going to the box and staying quiet when Katie talked to him because he cared for Joey.
These are just two examples out of many. Ross and Rachel's relationship was very well done as well. So will The Office and Modern Family. And so will long-running champ The Big Bang Theory. Most of them haven't. But Friends has. Shows attempting to be the new Friends march on and off the schedule every TV season with clockwork regularity.
But it's just weird that TV keeps tossing out parades of single and somethings in an attempt to copy a show that left the air 15 years ago.
Granted, the success of HIMYM gave the format new life just when it might have started flagging, but even the shows that last past their first season — the New Girl s and Happy Endings of the world — settle into a ratings-deprived state fairly quickly. And most of these shows are just awful.
You won't remember the majority of them because they came and went so quickly, but TV keeps trying to make them happen. Finally, it seems TV is moving past its Friends obsession — which only underscores how a disproportionate focus on one particular type of comedy choked out lots of other promising types for too long.
Comedy thrives on conflict and the hangout sitcom needs to deflate it, lest we wonder why the characters continue to hang out together. But even with fewer copycats on the air, Friends will remain eternally alluring to network executives.
As Jaime Weinman, a freelance writer and one of the world's foremost experts in TV comedy, puts it, the format of the show promises something they love: youth.
For all of the ways that TV executives' hunger to find the new Friends hurt broadcast TV comedy for many years, it also had at least one surprisingly beneficial effect: Friends solidified the idea of comedies having long-term story arcs with the success of its romances between Ross and Rachel and between Monica and Chandler. It gave viewers something to come back for week after week — and it gave the network big moments to promote.
And that has been influential on nearly every comedy that airs on the screen today. Go back to that list of big comedy hits. All of them have long-running story arcs that reach resolution very, very, very slowly.
